Relief sculpture is a captivating artistic medium that exists in the realm between two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional sculpture.
In this immersive 4-day workshop, participants will delve into the art of depicting the human figure in relief using traditional clay-modelling techniques. The dual approach, encompassing constructive analysis of form and direct observation from a live model, is designed to guide the students in the process of creating a convincing impression of depth and volumes.
Our approach will embrace a range of drawing techniques, including the use of line, comparative measurement, composition, as well as linear and aerial perspective. Once the contours of the figure are carefully mapped out on the surface of clay, the three-dimensional aspect of a relief sculpture will prompt us to explore the high points of projecting volumes and their spacial relationships. Subsequently, participants will proceed to apply advanced modeling principles, gaining the ability to control the interaction of light with the sculpted forms.
Working from a life model will provide a valuable opportunity to grasp the intricacies of the human body, its proportions, anatomy and gesture.
